Are you sure it needs to blink?

12/3/2015

There is nothing more frustrating than things that are blinking.

Wireless adapters, USB drives and external hard drives often blink when they are doing something. So it's after hours, you turned off the lights, ready to immerse yourself in some kind of more or less interactive experience, and now the entire room lights up blinking.

I don't need the blinking. Why do I have to use duct tape to get peace? I will probably notice if the device stops working without the blinking. Besides, if it stops blinking it could just as well be that the blinking function isn't working (what a shame that would be). I can't tell without trying the device anyway. So, for the love of the internet, stop blinking.

Does it need to blink? Probably it doesn't. For things that are charging and doesn't have a display, some sort of indication is good - I don't typically stare at my electric tootbrush when it is charging (I don't usually have it on my desk).

I really don't need blinking. Remove it.

Make it easy to cancel stuff

There are a few things that I will not do if it's too complicated. People are known to even not donate to charities if their webpages are slow. But if I want to cancel something, I will cancel it regardless of how complicated the procedure is.

So just make it easy. You won't make more money from me by making it hard to cancel.

Most sites are good at this usually. But I recently had a credit card of mine expire, and I noticed that some of the services that I had on it didn't really offer me an easy way of just cancelling the service instead of renewing it. Renew / update payment information or just cancel it should be two almost equally simple things to do.

Please make all pricing information be readily available

Thought experiment: you have an application that you're using. You like it. In fact, you like it so much that you think that the people making it deserve to get money for it. So you go into their site. No pricing information readily available there. The trial on the program expires. So you click on "upgrade" and you only reach a generic page. To figure out how much a regular license costs, you have to click somewhere between five and ten times to get to what you want.

Please don't do this.

This is an instance of the "shut up and take my money" problem. Please, shut up, show me how much it costs and then (possibly) take my money.

Please make your "unsubscribe" pages look like the rest. Put some effort into it.

99% of unsubscribe pages look nothing like the page that sends it.

Put some effort into it.

Facebook: "[someone] commented on this". Well, what did they write?

My friends will often comment on a post, and then I will get something in my feed saying that they commented on it. But then there is no way of viewing that comment. The only option I get is to view the entire comment feed. But, popular posts can have thousands and thousands of comments, so that is not exactly a viable option (and they are likely to only be names of people they wanted to share the post with).

Please make it easy to view those comments. It should be a link next to the name, which should take me to their comments and the surrounding ones.

Don't ask me to rate your app

I will rate it if I like it.
If I don't, I probably won't.
If I don't like it and you want me to rate it, I'll rate it and then uninstall it.

Few interesting things on the internet would work well without cookies, so please just do whatever you have to do and leave me alone. I consent to all of your cookies. Thanks.

Why is there a waiting time for unsubscribing from newsletters?

11/6/2015

Today I unsubscribed from all PayPal newsletters, and I got a message saying it will take up to ten days for the change to take effect.

Why does something as simple as that take ten days? I've seen this in a lot of newsletters I have unsubscribed to.

I cannot believe there is a manual step involved, so why is it TEN days and not ten milliseconds?

To still get emails after unsubscribing from a newsletter seems absurd to me.

What's with the Facebook comments that only has a name in it?

Sometimes I will get a notification saying that someone has tagged me in a comment.

This is usually to share something with me, which apparently takes too much time.

Instead of polluting the comments (having a large percentage of them be names does not make for interesting reading), I think Facebook just just implement something that asks the user: "you seemed to only have tagged people in this comment, and nothing else. Was your intention to only share this post with them"?

Or some shorter version of that.

Why is "exit" the new "minimize"?

It drives me nuts that "exit" is the new "minimize".

I realize that I have already written about this, however, it has now gotten to the point where I accidentally close certain programs because programs in a similar category would minimize.

Argh.
