I consider this to be a common problem.
Mario Kart 64 was the last good Mario Kart game.
The reason is simple:
Losing your items when you fall off a cliff or get struck by lightning is stupid.
That is all.
The ability to keep your items indefinitely was one of the best parts of Mario Kart 64. It allowed for a bit of strategy and display of skill. Now that's gone.
If something works, don't remove it.
